Week Five
I know this has nothing to do with football, but it does speak to the natural competitiveness of men, and for that matter, boys. I was teaching my 3 year old son to hold a bat and hit a baseball in our backyard, truly enjoying some father-son bonding time. I was surprised to see that his ability to hit the plastic baseball, that I was tossing to him, far exceeded my expectations as he sent a couple of the balls flying toward my head but barely missing and bouncing off the fence behind me. After a few minutes of this, my wonderful little son informed me that he wanted to throw the baseball and that I could bat. His first pitch was wild and over my head, but I swung wildly anyway, making my son laugh. The second pitch was thrown far behind me and I swung around backward making a half-hearted attempt to hit the ball. Once again my son thought this was hilarious as he doubled over with laughter. As he stood up to pitch me another plastic baseball, I guess my subconscious competitive juices started to flow. Two strikes against me; no way was this little shrimp going to strike me out.
For some unexplained reason he threw this pitch over-handed and hard as if he knew he just needed to get one more past me to strike me out. Surprisingly, he threw the baseball right over the plate and instinctively I swung; maybe a little too hard. As fast as the plastic baseball had come at me, it returned at an even faster pace toward my son’s head, bouncing off his forehead in a high arch back over me. After calming the cries, reducing the swelling with a bag of ice, and facing that “look” from my wife, my son and I made amends playing a little more baseball with a little less testosterone.
Since we have seen so many of these already this year as Razorback fans, we will briefly discuss interceptions this week. An interception occurs when a defensive player catches a pass thrown by an offensive player, usually the quarterback, which results in the defense taking possession of the football. Once the defensive player catches the football, he may run with the ball and attempt to score a touchdown for the defensive team until he is tackled. If you watch the Arkansas – Florida game this Saturday I am sure you will see a few of these.
