WEE Draw -- The ABCs of ART

 

Ages: 3-5 yrs.
Date: Tuesday, June 10,17 & Thursday, June 12, 19
Time: 10:30am - Noon or 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Fee: $15 per class

The morning activities are repeated in the afternoon.
There are 4 different classes offered. You may attend all four or
choose from any of the four.
Choose the time that best fits your child.

Your little "wee-drawer" will develop a visual vocabulary as they paint sing and draw. They will learn how to look at the art of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Klee and others as we stir their imagination. Dirty duds are recommended. Parents are asked to stay and enjoy doing art with their child.

 

Artist's Canvas Painted Shoes

Ages: 6-14 yrs.
Date: July 29
Time: 10 am - Noon or 1pm - 2:30pm
Fee: $15 per class

(Paint supplies are included. Students will furnish their own canvas shoes.)

Students will research the painting style of a famous artist of their choice, then design a pair of painted shoes reminiscent of that artist. Students will work with Tee Juice Fabric Markers. They will need to bring a pair of canvas shoes that are free from dirt and oils.

Two Day Cartoon Workshop

Ages: 6-14 yrs.
Date: July 30 & 31
Time: 10:00 am - Noon
Fee: $25

Forget about realism, perspective, and shading! This is where you are free to let your imagination run wild, and break all the rules. Students will learn to draw cartoons with easy step-by-step lessons that are sure to reap success.

 

Art-a-Rama

 

Two sessions each day:
Session 1: 10am - Noon and Session 2: 1pm - 3pm
Register for one class, one day, or a full week of classes

Fees: $15 per class; $25 per day; $100 for 10 classes (2 classes/day)
Full payment is required at registration.

Ages: 6 - 14 yrs.

Students will complete an art project in each class. Dirty duds are required. (We can accommodate parents who work. Ask about special hours.)

Enrollment is limited to 15 students per class. Students are accepted on a first come, first served basis. All camps are staffed by a professional artist/educator or professional artist and young adult volunteer interns. Any withdrawals made less than one week before the start of the camp will be refunded at 50% of the registration fee. Withdrawals made after the course has started will not be refunded.


Week One: June 23-27: "Faces, Places, & Inner Spaces

Students will do self-portraits, study Karl Wirsum, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, travel around the world and back again, create a vessel of clay, and discover Dancing Ganesha.

Week Two: July 7 - 11: "What's Up with the Cubist Artists?"


Students explore geometic properties and relationships in a two-dimensional work of art. They first search for and identify polygons in a Cubist painting and then use polygons to create their own Cubist portrait of a classmate. Students will work with paper Mache', resists, and discover an array of painting techniques.

Week Three: July 14- 18: "Spin a Tale and Travel Around the World"

Celebrate color, shapes, and images that make the arts of our world. Students will learn to paint like an impressionist, create a torn paper journal, and discover Hawaiian quilt designs. Cartooning and drawing will also be part of their art experiences during this week of art.

Week Four: July 21 - 25: "The Good, the Bad, and the Bugly of Art!"

Students will be inspired by nature to create a variety of art using all types of materials that will stir their imagination to create playful and unexpected works of art. They will paint, draw, gain cartooning skills and work with 3-D images.

Junior High & Middle School Band Camp

Band students who have finished grades 6, 7, or 8 and played an instrument for at least one school year can attend Junior High & Middle School Band Camp from June 9-13. Classes run 9am - 3pm. Group lesson topics include performance techniques, warm-up exercises, etudes and related activities. Rehearsals both morning and afternoon with a 6:30 pm concert on June 13. String Jazz Improv Camp

The String Jazz Improv Camp on June 16-20 gives orchestra students finishing eighth grade (with director's consent) through 12th grade an opportunity to participate in rehearsals, jazz improv sessions, master classes and sectionals plus combo rehearsals. Classes run 9am - 3pm. There also will be a Friday night performance followed by a student jam session at Sweet Bay Coffee. Fee is $75. National Brass Academy

High school and college brass players can toot their horns at the National Brass Academy June 22-28, which features the Apex Brass Quintet and soloists Pat Sheridan and Sam Pilafian. Sheridan has appeared as tuba soloist in venues ranging from the White House to an NBA half-time show at the Hollywood Bowl. Pilafian is best known as a founding member of the internally renown Empire Brass Quintet. Includes rehearsals, private lessons, master classes and concerts. Fees are $160 for commuter students and $265 for resident students, with housing in Sebastian Commons. For more information, call 479-788-7972.

Technology & Career Camps

H.O.T.T. Skills Camp (Health Occupations for Today and Tomorrow), June 16-19, is for young men entering grades 9-12. Daily career features include working in a mock operating room to assist in an appendectomy procedure with surgical technology on June 16; learning to determine care and health issues using “Sim” man, one of the school’s high-fidelity simulators in nursing on June 17; generating X-rays on a typodont and producing impressions of teeth and pouring up models in dental hygiene on June 18; and performing various scientific experiments in magnetism, electricity, electrostatic and optics relating to the basics of the imaging sciences on June 19. Pre-registration required. Fee: $15/day or $50/four days.


Camp E!magination: Whodunit? is back on June 16-20 from 1-5pm. The criminal justice camp is a non-traditional career exploration opportunity for teens in grades 7-12. Pre-registration required. Fee is $30.

 

Fifteen aspiring Web designers entering grades 9-12 are eligible for the E!magination Web Design Camp 8:30am – noon on July 7-11. Tackle Adobe Photoshop and HTML coding using Notepad and other programs to create a Web site. Fee is $30.

 

E!magination Bare Bones Computer Surgery Camp from 9am – 3pm on July 22-23 is for kids grames 7-12 to get an introduction to electronics and learn computer hardware basics with hands-on activities, ending with operating a personal computer. Fee is $25 (includes lunch).

 

Students in grades 7-12 learn the basics of robotic sensing and locomotion by controlling a robotic arm in this E!magination Robotics Camp from 9am-3pm on July 29. Command this unit with its five-switch wired controller and test motor skills with corresponding lights to grab, release, lift, lower, rotate and pilot sideways, all while having fun. Fee is $15 and includes lunch.

Western Arkansas Ballet Summer Dance Camps for ages 4-12 are a great way to get kids active. They feature creative movement and/or ballet geared to the students’ levels. In a free performance, students will showcase what they have learned at 1pm June 30 at UA-Fort Smith’s Breedlove Auditorium. This workshop offers dance students an opportunity to be exposed to professionals without leaving the state. They will be classified by performance levels before beginning classes. They workshop features three daily ballet, jazz and modern classes along with three rehearsals for a total of six hours of instruction.

 

For fledgling tappers and new this year, WAB has a One-Day Tap Class Workshop given by their resident tap instructor.

Their Young Choreographers Dance Camp gives dances, ages 7-10, a chance to explore choreography and utilize their classmates as medium for pieces presented at week's end. The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Academy of the Arts offers a new KinderKidz Camp for pre-schoolers on July 28-Aug 2. It explores the world of music, movement and theater in a fun-filled environment.
