May Festival Fun

May 7 - 9
Strawberry HomeFest (Bald Knob) is a fun weekend. The festival begins on Thursday night and ends Saturday night. Vendors from around the state and joining states bring their wares, a carnival is in town for the event, and the school and churches hold reunions and homecomings. The event offers games, contests, beauty pageant, a grand parade that seems to be larger each year, and live entertainment throughout the festival.  Old Berry Sheds, Ark. 367 North; 501-724-3140

May 22 - 23
Diamond Festival (Murfressboro) will offer arts and crafts, food vendors, children's activities, a 5K run, tournaments, live music, a pet show, parade, and more!

May 22 - 24
Riverfest
(Little Rock/North Little Rock) is the state’s largest family festival with six stages of entertainment for all ages. There are special activities areas for children and teens, arts, crafts, food and more.

Petit Jean State Park

Cascades, Caves, Camping, and even Cars!

Petit Jean State Park, outside of Morrilton, is a great getaway. The first time my family visited the park, we went just for the day, which ended way too soon. There is so much to do here. There are numerous hikes, of varying difficulty, and gorgeous scenery. If your family is a bit older or experienced at hiking, you’ll definitely want to take on the Cedar Falls Trail. This two mile, 2 hour, hike is well worth the time if the water is running. You’ll see a 90 foot waterfall up close. If you don’t have the time or aren’t up for this moderate to difficult hike, there are numerous easy options that provide similar scenic views. To see the fall without the hike, look for the XX trail. A wooden walkway will lead you to a deck that provides a view down the canyon and overlooking the waterfall. One of my family’s new favorite trails is the Bear Cave trail. It’s just a ¼ of a mile and includes incredible rock formations that the kids can walk through, go in, and even climb over. This is a great place to stop and play a while.

On top of the mountain you’ll also find a car museum (worth stopping to see, really), a visitor’s center, a lake, a petting zoo, camp sites, cabins, and a lodge.  If you would like to camp but don’t have the equipment, they offer rent-a-camp and rent-a-tepee, so no more excuses.

Visit their website at petitjeanstatepark.com.

Crater of Diamonds State Park

Crater of Diamonds State Park offers a one-of-a-kind adventure. I took my kids here this summer. Boy, it was hot. Fall is a perfect time to go. At this park you can search a 35-acre field for diamonds, and if you find one, it’s yours! Diamonds are found most every day. Over 80,000 have been found including the 40.23-carat “Uncle Sam”. You might also find jasper, agate, and quartz. Go for the day or camp. There are campsites with water and electricity, a gift shop, and restaurant. Other accommodations are available in Murfreesboro, just 2 miles southeast of the park. Take some buckets and hand shovels. You can rent a sifter at the park, if you’d like. Caution: If you are a clean freak, or “Monkish”, you will definitely get DIRTY! Take an extra pair of clothes, socks, shoes, everything! You’ll need it!  More details available here.

Ozark Folk Center

The Ozark Folk Center provides a perfect family weekend get-away.  There's a lot of fun to be had there.  Tap your toes to mountain music. See blacksmithing, pottery-making and over 18 other pioneer skills and crafts. Learn to play the dulcimer or autoharp, to jig dance or to grow an organic herb garden. Browse the gift shop. Sample great cooking at the Skillet Restaurant.  The Ozark Folk Center works to preserve and share the Ozark heritage in a fun way.  It is located near the town of Mt. View, an equally quaint place.  Click here to begin your travel plans
