Vitamin D to Reduce Hip Fracture
by Dr. Bruce Glover, OB-GYN Women's Group PA

The risk of osteoporosis and the need for calcium has been emphasizes recently by Sally Field’s commercials on TV. Hop fracture can be devastating to elderly patients. Ten to twenty percent of elderly women with a hip fracture will have to be institutionalized. Recent studies have shown that taking increases calcium alone is not enough. Viatamin D increases the absorption of calcium and has now been shown to reduce hp fracture. It appears that 800-1000 IU of vitamin D is needed to achieve this. Making sure that all women over forty receive adequate calcium and vitamin D may make it unnecessary to take additional medications. Sorry Sally.
