Women's Health: Dr. Bruce Glover

Obesity Effects on Pregnancy and Children
by Dr. Bruce Glover, OB-GYN Women's Group PA

Recent studies have shown that the mother’s weight before her first pregnancy will have an influence on complications she will have in that pregnancy. Both diabetes and hypertension are increased in the first pregnancy of obese mothers. This increases the risk to the mother and increases the risk for elective preterm delivery of the baby because of maternal indications. The risk is not as great in subsequent pregnancies.

Other studies show that very obese women that lose significant weight before getting pregnant have children that are less heavy at eight and eleven years of age. This decreased the incidence of childhood obesity.

It is clear from this information that women would be well advised to get their weight down as close to recommended as possible before attempting pregnant.
