Your Child's Health: Dr. James Cheshier

FEATURED ARTICLE
Summertime and Your Child
by Dr. James Cheshier

It is summertime and the heat is on. It is very important to protect babies from sun, heat and bugs. Little ones should never spend any long periods of time in direct sunlight. Even with sunscreen they will burn. Stay in shady areas with good air movement. If over 6 months of age, use approved baby sunscreen, light weight and light colored clothing that covers arms and legs. A hat is always appropriate. small amounts of bug repellant applied to ankles and wrists is also appropriate. Continue routine fluid intake.

Similar rules are in order for older children. Light colored clothes and insect repellant are needed. A hat and good sunscreen use is critical. Most important of all is constant fluid intake. Despite the ads for sports drinks, water is best by far. Avoid caffeine, as it is dehydrating. If a child feels dizzy or lightheaded, they should seek shade immediately and increase fluids.

In the evenings, always check children and babies for ticks for prompt removal.

Have a great summer!
